First Lady Lauren Baker and Bruins Mascot, Blades the Bruin, to Visit Berkshire Athenaeum on Tuesday, Feb. 20

The Berkshire Athenaeum is pleased to welcome First Lady Lauren Baker and the Bruins mascot, Blades the Bruin, on Tuesday, Feb. 20 for the Boston Bruins annual PJ Drive to benefit Department of Children and Families (DCF) and Cradles to Crayons®.

In recognition of this visit, the library will be hosting a pajama party at 2 p.m. that day in the auditorium. The public is invited to wear their favorite pajamas to this family-friendly event that will also feature fun games and prizes. Please consider bringing a new pair of pajamas to donate; this year’s goal is to collect 15,000 pairs of new pajamas for under-resourced children and teens.

The drive runs now through March 15. The library will be collecting new pairs of pajamas for babies, children and teens. Collection boxes are located in both Children’s and Adult services.

Bruins forward P.J. Axelsson and his wife, Siw, started the pajama drive during the Boston Bruins 2007-2008 season as a way to give to give back to their community. The couple collected 1,600 pairs of pajamas for Cradles to Crayons® which connects with social service agencies to identify specific children in need.

Participating libraries will compete with other organizations for special Bruins prizes including a street hockey clinic with Blades and autographed Bruins items. The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) works with the Boston Bruins to coordinate library participation in the drive.  Libraries from around the state use the Massachusetts Library System’s delivery service, typically used to send books and other library materials, to send their pajamas to area collection locations which increases libraries’ ability to participate in the drive.
