Berkshire Athenaeum Awarded "Full STEAM Ahead" Grant

The Berkshire Athenaeum is excited to announce that the Children’s Department won a “Full STEAM Ahead” grant from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC). The MBLC awarded the Berkshire Athenaeum $7,500 under the Federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). These grants allow libraries to work with their communities to increase children’s interest and skills in the important areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math.

The Berkshire Athenaeum is working to design a STEAM activity station in the children’s department. Many patrons have already noticed that some of the furniture in the department has been rearranged in preparation for this new activity station.  The Library will also use the grant to work collaboratively with early childhood specialists in the community to incorporate more programming designed around the STEAM curriculum. Though families and children are the primary group that this grant is geared for, the Berkshire Athenaeum hopes to also include early childhood educators. One way this is going to be accomplished is through use of circulating STEAM programming kits that will include books, music and learning activities for children as young as infants and toddlers through early elementary-aged students.

Be sure to stop in often and see the progress that is being made!
