Berkshire Athenaeum Marks National Library Week With AWESOME Box

Berkshire Athenaeum patrons now have the chance to declare a library item AWESOME.  Patrons who are returning a library book, CD or DVD that they found especially amazing, useful or entertaining can drop it in a specially marked AWESOME Box. Library staff will promote items returned to the AWESOME Box and share the recommendations, which can be viewed at

Reference Services Supervisor Madeline Kelly explained, “The AWESOME Box gives readers the opportunity to recognize an item that particularly connected with them. In turn, the library can spotlight AWESOME content curated by the community to boot. We thought it fitting to bring this initiative online during National Library Week.”

Library patrons are advised that placing an item in the AWESOME Box does indeed return the item to the library, removing the item from their library account, just as when returns are made to the library book drops. While items that are AWESOME are shared online for general viewing, information about patrons having borrowed or suggested that the item is AWESOME is, as always, confidential. AWESOME Boxes are located at both the Children’s Library Desk and the Main Floor Adult Circulation Department.

The AWESOME Box is supported by the Harvard Library Innovation Lab, the Harvard Library Lab, and the Arcadia Fund.
