 Senior Center July Calendar

Are You Okay Program

This program is in conjunction with the Pittsfield Police Department and the Senior Center.  It provides a daily check-in telephone call to people who may live alone, be at risk of falling, have no local family, or for anyone who just wants to feel safer.  Each morning the individual receives a phone call..  If there is no response after several attempts then an alert to the family or emergency contact of the individual would occur.  If all else fails the Police Department will go to the house to make sure you are okay!  If you are interested please call (413) 499-9346 for more information.

AARP Tax Preparation

 A free service offered by trained  tax professionals to help you prepare your  tax returns.  Volunteers from the American Association for Retired Persons in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service and the Massachusetts Department of Revenue Service offer this seasonal program to elders.


Appointments are available during tax filing season (February-April) by calling the Center to schedule an appointment.

Art Studio!

Casual art studio time for all skill levels. Any type, any style, and medium; All are welcome!! No experience necessary. Classes are held Mondays at 1:00 PM


Played two times a week at the Center - Wednesdays and  Fridays at 1 p.m. There is a small cost which goes toward the prizes. Your frequent attendance allows you to attend the free yearly party Great Fun! Open to all seniors.  Individuals interested in playing bingo should be at the game at least 15 minutes before to sign up with the group on the second floor.

Breakfast Club

The Breakfast Club is held on the second Thursday of every month, except for the summer months of July and August. Breakfast is served at 8:00 AM.  It is held in the main room on the second floor where the breakfast is cooked by staff and volunteers.  Guest speakers, usually related to health issues, begin at 9:00 AM.  This club is sponsored by Ralph J. Froio Senior Center and is open to all seniors.  Interested individuals must sign up in advance at the office where they can purchase a Breakfast Club ticket for $3.00.


This program takes place every Tuesday at 1:00 PM.  All skill levels are welcomed!  You can come alone or bring other interested friends who like to play.  So, stop by, mingle with a great group of people, and enjoy yourself!

Brown Bag Program

Brown Bag provides groceries once a month to supplement the food budgets of low-income people who are 55 years of age and older.  This program is sponsored by the Food Bank of Western Mass and has a suggested donation of per month.  Applications can be picked up at the Senior Center office and eligibility will be determined.  Each client who is approved will receive an ID card and number.  The Brown Bag contains approximately $15.00 worth of food, and each month the bag of groceries is different.  Pickup for the Brown Bag program is the 4th Friday of each month between 10:30 AM and 1:00 PM.

Blood Pressure

Service offered to monitor your blood pressure and understanding it. It is offered on the 4th Tuesday of every month. 8:45 – 10:45. Free. Please call ahead to schedule an appointment.


Every Tuesday at 1:00 pm. An exciting two person card game. All skills are welcomed to learn and/or play.

Card Party

The Card Party is held every month on the third Thursday of each month at 1:00 PM.  The cost to attend is $1.00 per person and tickets can be purchased in the front office on the first floor.  The party includes dessert/coffee, time to play cards, or other games and table prizes.  This party is open to all seniors, but you must sign up and purchase your ticket(s) in advance at the front office. $2 per ticket.

Cards and Scrabble

Join the fun and cordiality of these engaging table games on Mondays at 12:30 PM.  You’ll encounter afternoons of fun with like-minded gamesters.  It’s instructive and delightful!  


The Ceramics class meets every Thursday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.  Beginners are welcomed.  Volunteers organize this group.  This group of talented folks works with green ware, cleaning and painting turning it into these beautiful art works. Dues are paid weekly to allow the group to purchase paints and glazes in bulk. And it allows us to order your green ware items under our bulk orders at a discounted price.

The front office will take the names and phone numbers of interested individuals and give this to class volunteers for placement of the individuals into the class.


The Senior Center operates a wonderful Café, Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM.  The menu includes full breakfast at low prices.  Lunch is available from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.  The lunch menu includes soup, hot and cold sandwiches and desserts.  Many folks stop by to have a cup of coffee and visit with friends.  This is a great way to start the day at the Senior Center.  Open to all seniors.

Chair Caning

Join and learn the method of weaving cane to build a comfortable seat and back for chairs. Attendees are required to bring their own chair. Call the Senior Center for schedule information.

Chess Club

Come and learn how to play. This newly formed group is looking for recruits. Held every Tuesday at 10 AM. Free.

Computer Workshop

We offer computer instruction for all levels in a casual atmosphere. Classes are held on Tuesday at 10:00 and, Wednesday & Thursday 10:00 AM &11:00 AM.   Free! No sign-up necessary. Drop in on the hour

Comedy Dungeon

Laughter is the best medicine! Watch and discuss classic and modern comic videos, play games, tell jokes, trivia, and improv. Held Fridays at 11:00 AM.

Flexible Feet & Core Stability

This class provides exercises to concentrate on your balance. Meets every Wednesday at 11:30 PM & Friday at 11:45 PM.

Foot Clinic

This program provides comprehensive foot care. This service is offered on the 1st Thursday of every month. The charge is $30. Appointment is required.


The Friends of the Pittsfield Council On Aging, Inc. is a nonprofit group which was formed many years ago to help offset special events, programs and the Senior Center facility. Over the years, this group has played a very important part in the success of the Center. By joining the Friends for yearly dues of $10 or a one payment Lifetime fee of $50.00, you too can help in the success of the Senior Center.

From Stage to Screen

This interesting group reads a play or novel, discusses the reading and usually ends the series with a film of the work to discuss.  Attendees are expected to purchase the material used in this event. Held on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.


Game Room

This room features two regulation size pool tables for hours of fun. There is also space for cards, dominos, checkers, chess or backgammon. Various pool leagues are established throughout the year. For more information on current leagues call the Senior Center at (413) 499-9346.

Hand and Foot

Hand and Foot is an exciting card game that is an offspring of canasta, but with simpler rules. Classes are held Mondays at 1:00 PM.

Line Dancing

Various styles of line dancing are held at the Senior Center including Traditional Line Dancing and Country Line Dancing. Line dancing can be done solo; it doesn’t require a partner, and is a great way to liber up and stay in shape. Open to all! Classes are held Mondays at 9:30 AM.

Knitting, Macramé, and Crochet

This group meets on Fridays at 9:00 AM to swap ideas and help each other to make some beautiful items. The group is instructed by volunteers.  Students supply their own materials or can purchase them from the instructor.  No charge.  This class meets September through June.

Mah Jong

This group meets each week on Mondays at 1 p.m. to play this intriguing game. Free.


Individuals can learn quick and easy ways to meditate no matter where they are. Classes are held on Tuesdays at 10:15.

NARFE - National Association of Retired Federal Employees

The National Association of Retired Federal Employees - Chapter 428 will hold eight meetings at the Senior Center on the fourth Monday of the month.  All meetings start at 1:00 PM.

No meetings are held in July and August.  The May luncheon meeting and the December dinner meeting are at other sites, at the direction of the Chapter.

NARFE is the only organization solely devoted to protecting the individual and family interest of civilians who have retired or will retire from federal service.  All federal annuitants, their spouses, federal employees and their spouses are eligible for membership.  Guests and visitors are welcome at all times

New Member Day

Every third Wednesday of the month at 10:00 AM, we are reaching out to local seniors in the community who may not know what is offered at the Senior Center.  It is an overview of all programs and a tour of the facility.  Complimentary danish pastries and coffee will be provided.  This lasts approximately one hour. These meetings are open to all seniors.

Nutrition Program

Elder Services of Berkshire County provides a hot meal at the Ralph J. Froio Senior Center, Monday through Friday at 11:30 AM.   It is held in the Main Room on the second floor.  A voluntary donation of $2.00 is suggested.  Reservations are required a day in advance by calling (413) 499-9346 or checking in on the second floor before 11:30 AM.  Cancellations can be made by telephoning this office (413) 499-9346 and we will notify the program.

Osteo Exercise Class

This class is a blend of discussion, nutritional information and exercise for those with osteoporosis, or those who wish to prevent osteoporosis. Exercise consists of stretch, balance and work with small weights. Advanced Osteo Classes meet on Monday at 9:00AM. Beginner Osteo Classes meet on Wednesday and Thursday at 9:00 AM.  No charge and open to all seniors.

Outreach Services

An Outreach Worker is available Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM by appointment only.  The purpose of the outreach service is to provide informational and referral services free of charge to those seniors in the community who may not be aware of what is available to them, and also to bring seniors to the center to take advantage of the services available there.

Topics include health care and insurance information, activities at the Senior Center, community activities as well as assisting with identifying specific needs individuals may have.  The Outreach Worker is available to meet with you in your home or at the Senior Center, depending on personal preference.  For more information, or an appointment, please contact us at (413) 499-9346.


A trick-taking card game typically for two to four players and played with a 48 card deck. Mondays at 12:00pm.

Pitch League

This group meets on Fridays at 9:00 AM weekly, to play Pitch.  There are prizes and yearly luncheons, and it is open to all seniors who wish to play and have fun!  There are nominal weekly dues per person.

Poetry Group

Members of this group read poems and discuss and analyze them.  Some members compose their own poems.  This group meets every Monday morning at 10:00 AM.  There is no charge for this group. Open to all seniors.



Beginners are welcome.  Join our class and meet new people.  Learn strip quilting and appliqué.  We make quilts in all sizes plus wall hangings. There is no charge for this group, but participants are responsible for buying fabric and basic sewing supplies.  The class meets on Friday afternoons at 12:30 PM from September through June.  Open to all seniors.

Scrapbooking & Card Making

Exercise your creativity as you display your memories in a scrapbook with photos and embellishments! Meets on Wednesdays at 1:00 PM.

Shake Your Soul

Enjoy a unique fitness experience and improve your flexibility through dancing to the sounds of world music. This class meets on Mondays at 10:30 AM.

Senior Health Program

Free Blood Pressure clinics are held every second and fourth Tuesday of the month call the Senior Center at 
499-9346 for an appointment.  Provided for free by Molari HealthCare Services.

SHINE – Serving Health Information and Needs of Elders

A volunteer counselor will meet with you one on one to help with Medigap insurance problems, Medicare questions or concerns with changing policies, etc.  This program is by appointment only, every Tuesday afternoon beginning at 12:15 PM.  All appointments can be made by telephoning the center at (413) 499-9346.  This is a free service.

Supportive Day

The Supportive Day Service Program is offered to seniors who require some assistance and supervision.  The program provides a safe environment, offering support for families, while providing socialization and activities in a group setting.  The program is located at the Ralph J. Froio Senior Center at 330 North Street in Pittsfield.  A supportive atmosphere is provided, with activities to meet the needs and interests of each participant.

The program is open from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday.  We offer morning and afternoon snacks and luncheons daily for a nominal donation of $2.00 per day.

There is a fee for the program based on full-day or half-day participation.  Elder Services of Berkshire County, Inc. covers the program fee for eligible seniors.  Some transportation can also be arranged at an additional charge.

Tai Chi Classes

The purpose of Tai Chi is to promote health and tranquility in one’s mind, body and spirit.  We achieve this by training ourselves to calm and relax our mind intent while performing gentle, soft, natural movement with gentle diaphragmatic breathing.

People with arthritis, bursitis, high blood pressure, breathing disorders, stress, balance problems, muscle and joint soreness are encouraged to participate, as Tai Chi is known for alleviating these problems.  Having fun and enjoying yourself are the only requirement.

Tai Chi Classes are held on Wednesdays at 10:30 AM and again at 12:30 PM.  Beginners are encouraged to attend the Friday sessions at 1:45 PM.   The cost is $3.00 per class.

Tai Chi with Weights Classes

Classic Tai Chi regimen is combined and adapted to minimal weight utilization. Class is held on Tuesday from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. and again on Thursday from 1:15 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. The cost is $3 per session.


The Ralph J. Froio Senior Center operates two wheelchair-lift equipped vans, with curb-to-curb service.  We offer transportation to and from Social Day Programs at the Senior Center, and the Adult Day Health Program for a special cost.  We also offer transportation to and from grocery shopping, medical appointments, errands and social activities around town.  A 48-hour advance notification is required for all rides and is based on availability. There is a $3 charge each way for this service.

Traveling Friends

The Traveling Friends Program is a travel group sponsored by the Friends of the Pittsfield Council On Aging, Inc. for the purpose of offering low cost trips.  There is no fee to join.  You do need to be a resident of Berkshire County.  All trips are posted on a regular basis on the Traveling Friends Bulletin Board located near the front office windows.  Interested individuals are requested to register for trips by filling out a form and putting a deposit down on overnight trips and full payment for day trips.  These trips fill up fast, so be sure to make your reservations early.  No age requirements.

Volunteering at the Senior Center

Volunteering at the Senior Center offers many rewards not only to you but also to users of the center.  There are many volunteer positions available, so stop by the center office and fill out an application and let us know in what areas you are knowledgeable and give us an idea of things you like to do.

All volunteers are requested to submit to the office a monthly time card detailing what you did and the total of hours.  This can range from piano playing to setting tables, or working on center committees, or teaching a class.  CORI checks must be done on all volunteers. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Volunteers are special to us, but we can't recognize your participation unless you submit your time cards to the office.

There is a volunteer recognition dinner held once a year to reward our volunteers.  Volunteers need to donate at least 25 hours of service each year in order to qualify for this dinner.


This talented group of individuals meets on Friday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. to work on carving basics, detail work and painting. Projects are selected by the instructor but students can make choices. Dues are paid weekly to cover costs of group materials. Students purchase their own tools and wood.


This class is for the beginner to mid-skill experienced woodworker.  Instructors are on hand to offer skills in the use of hand and power tools, safe use of equipment and project layout.  There is a charge for this weekly class and class size is limited.

Classes meet Tuesdays, and Wednesdays at 9:30 AM.  Students can only use the shop with an instructor present.

YMCA Senior Program

The YMCA Senior Program is designed for individuals aged 60 and older.  All classes are tailored to the unique needs of older adults and taught by certified instructors specifically trained in senior fitness.  This program is made possible by partial funding from the Ralph J. Froio Senior Center.  Participants who are residents of Pittsfield must be members of the Senior Center.  A doctor's permission is required annually.

Exercise improves muscle strength, endurance, heart and lung efficiency, flexibility and circulation.  It also reduces body fat and lowers blood pressure.  It gives you a chance to socialize with old and new friends too!

To receive your discount you must join the Senior Center and receive our membership card and then go to the YMCA to register and pay for their program.
