Department of Public Services

The Department of Public Services is responsible for the maintenance and repair of public infrastructure in the City and provides essential services to the 42,000+ citizens of the City of Pittsfield.  The Department, comprised of six divisions, operates on a 24 hour basis with pagers and emergency based night staffing.  The City employs a staff of 42 full-time employees in the Department of Public Services.

The primary areas of responsibility for the Department of Public Services include the operation and maintenance of:

Administration Division

  • Maintains parking permit accounts for municipal parking areas
  • Maintains about 16,000 water and sewer billing accounts
  • Administers the contract for residential curbside trash and recycling collection
  • Administers the contract with Community Eco Power/Pittsfield Resource Recovery Plant
  • Oversees environmental monitoring of City owned closed landfills
  • Issues snow emergencies

Engineering Division

  • Planning, design and construction management of City projects
  • Infrastructure record keeping
  • Permits for water, sewer and storm water connections and repairs, driveways, and water meters
  • Tax maps
  • GIS services for all departments
