Building Inspectors Department

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is well-known for its commitment to the wellbeing and safety of its citizens through adoption of some of the most comprehensive public safety regulations and codes in the nation.

The Building Inspectors Department is charged with the responsibility of ensuring the public safety by enforcement of those regulations in its areas of jurisdiction.  The Department is responsible for issuing building, electrical, plumbing and gas permits for new construction, repairs, renovations and demolition.  The Building Inspectors review plans for State Building Code and City Zoning Ordinance compliance and issue occupancy certificates.

In order to ensure that every citizen is treated fairly, the Building Inspectors strive to apply the regulations of the State Building Code, Electrical, Plumbing and Gas Codes, the City Zoning Ordinance and the City Sign Ordinance, evenhandedly and fairly so that all citizens can enjoy the protections intended by our legislators.

The Building Inspectors Department responds to calls and complaints from the general public concerning code and zoning questions, investigates complaints and conducts periodic safety inspections of public buildings as required by State Code.
