Pittsfield Better Block Hosts a Community Walk and Talk, June 8

Pittsfield Better Block, a new initiative from MassDevelopment and part of the Tyler Street Transformative District revitalization effort, will host a Community Walk and Talk on Thursday, June 8 at the Berkshire Dream Center on Tyler Street.

The event, which will be held 5:30-7:30 p.m., is an opportunity for residents to learn more about the ongoing work in the Morningside neighborhood, as well as the upcoming Pittsfield Better Block project, which will revamp a block on Tyler Street over the span of a few days this summer. The Better Block process takes a grassroots approach to planning, allowing the community to have direct involvement with rapid build-out and construction of revitalization projects, according to MassDevelopment.

“This is truly an exciting project that will literally transform one of our city blocks with the help of residents. The results will demonstrate the amazing possibilities of what happens when we unite as a community to move our city forward,” said Mayor Linda Tyer.

The project’s goals for participants and the community include:

  • Recognizing how placemaking and community design influence successful aging, health, economic vitality and overall livability;
  • Fostering healthier and more vibrant communities;
  • Sustainable transportation and land-use patterns;
  • Encouraging complete streets and placemaking; and
  • Enhancing perceptions and attitude toward community change.

“The Tyler Street Business Group is excited about the economic development potential creating a Better Block brings.  This event will stimulate thought in the private investment area, which has many possibilities,” said Diane Marcella, President, Tyler Street Business Group. “It will allow for wide community engagement, a chance for neighbors and people that want to share their abilities, to come out and create a vision for Tyler, together.  We want to thank Mass Development for making this possible.”
