The City of Pittsfield’s Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) will hosts its annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 14 at the Country Club of Pittsfield.
The event is for volunteers who have accrued 40 hours or more of service throughout 2015. Special guests will include Mayor Linda Tyer; State Representative Tricia Farley-Bouvier; City Councilor Donna Todd Rivers; and Director Michael Knapik, Western Mass. Office of the Governor.
The event will honor Elizabeth “Betty” Ziter, the 2016 Volunteer of the Year. Ziter, who has been with RSVP since 2009, volunteers at the RSVP office assisting the staff and the dispatcher. In 2015 Betty served 219 hours; her lifetime hours total is 1,307 hours.
Viale Florist, Inc. has been chosen as the recipient of the RSVP 2016 Community Business Partner Award. The business, which first opened in 1905, was owned by the Viale family. Today, the business is run by Michele Shier-Wilson, whose family assumed operations of the company in the late 1970s. For several years, Viale Florist has provided the centerpieces for the RSVP luncheon.
RSVP Director Cheryl Whalen credited the RSVP volunteers for their diligence and commitment to educating and reading to children, beautifying the community with trees and flowers, serving meals, driving cancer patients, assisting within community organizations, and offering their services wherever needed.
RSVP of Berkshire County is sponsored locally by the City of Pittsfield and receives support from the Corporation for National Service and Community Service (CNCS). RSVP includes more than half million seniors in community service projects nationwide.
RSVP provides recruitment, training and placement of adults 55 years of age and over as volunteers. The program enables adult volunteers to use their time and skills to meet new people, help others, be productive and creative, grow personally, explore new careers and work to make a difference in their community.
