Volunteers are now being sought for the Family Promise Mentoring Program, sponsored by Berkshire Housing Development Corp, in partnership with the Berkshire County Regional Housing Authority.
The program’s goal is to provide advocacy for individuals or families within the county in need of support to become more self-reliant. Assistance for participants includes identifying goals, stable housing, managing budgets with limited resources, and connecting to community resources.
Those interested in becoming mentors will first undergo an interview. Once selected, mentors will receive training and ongoing support to fulfill their role with a participating family. Training will begin at the end of April; a commitment of one to two hours each week is requested.
“The goal is to increase the family’s awareness and help them tap into available community resources. We want them to be as self-sufficient as possible,” says Ida Patella, Family Mentor Coordinator at Berkshire Housing. “We’re looking for individuals who are committed to working with these families and are willing to share their life skills.”
