On May 16th and 17th there will an open house at the Chestnut Tree Seed Orchard located in Springside Park. Visitors are invited to view the orchard and plant a disease resistant Chestnut seed.
In 2014, Mayor Bianchi signed a plan to help support the efforts of the American Chestnut Tree Foundation located in Ashville, North Carolina. The foundation then partnered with Springside Park to create a seed orchard filled with disease resistant Chestnut Trees. Last May, volunteers helped to plant 2,000 Chestnut seeds in the orchard. This year, volunteers can once again contribute by planting even more seeds.
The American Chestnut Tree Foundation’s mission is to “…restore the American chestnut tree to our eastern woodlands to benefit our environment, our wildlife, and our society.” (The American Chestnut Tree Foundation)
Mayor Bianchi stated, “Last year the seed planting was a tremendous success. I hope people who planted seeds will head back to the orchard to view their work. New comers can add to the disease resistant Chestnut Tree effort by helping to plant a seed as well.”
