Pittsfield, MA- On Saturday, May 9th Mayor Bianchi will be kicking off the Mayor’s Fitness Challenge. The kickoff event will take place at the First Street Common from 10:00am to 12:00pm in conjunction with the first Farmers Market of 2015.
The first 150 people register for the challenge will receive a free backpack from Berkshire Health Systems. The opening event will feature free exercise classes and free health and nutritional services.
Events wills start at 10 am. There will be a free warmup up lead by the Berkshire Running Center; a free Zumba class offered by the YMCA; a community walk; and a free thirty minute yoga class. In addition to the free classes, a children’s play area with soccer balls, hula hoops and chalk will be provided by the Pittsfield Recreation Department.
There will also be free community resources at the event including the Berkshire Health Systems van giving free health screenings, the Healthy Pittsfield Partnership, the Nutrition Center and the Center for Rehab giving free 10 minute physical therapy stretches and education sessions.
Mayor Bianchi commented, “The Mayor’s Fitness Challenge is for all of us. It is not a weight loss challenge or intense fitness training program. The challenge is a time for us all to make changes in our life to become a healthier community. The kickoff event in partnership with the Farmers Market will be a great day for families.”
Participants in the Fitness Challenge will work to build and track points by eating fruits and vegetables, drinking water and participating in physical activities. There are many opportunities to gain bonus points throughout the 10 week challenge including both free events and walks and runs which support local non-for-profits.

The Pittsfield kickoff event has been organized by Be Well Berkshires, the Pittsfield Healthy Partnership, the Pittsfield Health Department, the Pittsfield Recreation Department and the Mayor’s Office. The North Adams vs. Pittsfield Mayors Fitness challenge has been co-organized by Be Well Berkshires and the Northern Berkshire Community Coalition.
