Senior Tax Work Off Program

Mayor Bianchi is pleased to announce the opening of the Senior Tax Work Off Program for eligible senior citizens living in Pittsfield. The program provides an opportunity for eligible seniors to contribute their knowledge to the community while also receiving a tax abatement on their property taxes. The program allows for up to a $1,000 abatement and can be combined with other tax exemptions.

Who is eligible?

Participants must be age 60 or over at the time of application. Income eligibility shall be determined by using the locally adopted income eligibility guidelines of Massachusetts General Law Chapter 59, Section 5, clause 41C (plus an additional $5,000). If you are married, your yearly income cannot exceed $34,641.00.  For an individual, yearly income cannot exceed $29,372.00.  Eligible properties must be classified as residential, and must be owned and occupied by the participant at the time the work is performed. There will be a limit of two participants per eligible property; however, the total abatement cannot exceed the maximum exemption of $1,000.00. All volunteer work must be completed between June 1, 2015 and November 30, 2015.

What are the program details?

Hours worked will be paid no less than the current Massachusetts minimum wage with a maximum abatement of $1,000.00 The programcan be combined with other exemptions.

What jobs are available?

This year there are positions available in the Berkshire Athenaeum, Building Inspectors Office, Pittsfield Police Department and Parks and Open Spaces Management.  Applicants will be placed in positions by City Hall staff based on personal interests and prior work experience.

Where can seniors apply?

Applications for the Senior Tax Work Off program are available in the Assessors’ Office located in City Hall, room 108, 70 Allen Street, or online at www.cityofpittsfield.org. Applications must be postmarked or received via hand delivery by April 30th (Thursday), 2015.  Applications can be returned to the Assessors’ Office or mailed to: Assessors’ Office, City Hall, 70 Allen Street, Pittsfield MA 01201.

The selection of participants will be based on need and shall be valid for one year. Qualified seniors not selected for this program will be placed on a waiting list in order of need, in the event that other opportunities become available. The city is not obligated to offer another position if a volunteer refuses an assignment. Active municipal employees are not eligible for the Senior Citizen Tax Work-Off program.
