Morningside Loop Kick-Off Announced

Mayor Bianchi and the Healthy Pittsfield Partnership have announced a Kick – Off Walk for the new Morningside Loop.  The Morningside Loop is a designated 2.74 -mile walking/running route that connects to the downtown Pittsfield walking loop.  The Kick-Off Walk will begin at 10:00 am on Monday, August 11, 2014 at the steps of St. Mary’s Church on Tyler Street.

Mayor Bianchi said “I’m very excited by the addition of a second walking/running loop in the City of Pittsfield.  Physical fitness is important for everyone, and we have worked hard to increase outdoor activities and offer a healthy environment in Pittsfield, especially over this past summer.”

He added, “This walking loop initiative has added to downtown Pittsfield.  Creating one in the Morningside neighborhood will encourage walkability in the area. The path offers a safe, measured walking loop and connects to the downtown area.  I look forward to seeing additional walking loops added to Pittsfield in the future.”

Walking reduces stress, relieves pain, and promotes relaxation.  Walking 30 to 60 minutes per day cuts your risk of heart disease and stroke in half, or walking 30 minutes a day, five days a week can improve overall health and prevent disease.  Additionally, kids should have 60 minutes of physical activity each day.  An advantage of the loop is that one can start anywhere and walk as far as they choose, while at the same time exploring many different aspects of Morningside.

“Creating a walking or jogging group is another great way to utilize the loops and can make exercising more enjoyable.” Mayor Bianchi added.

Gina Armstrong, Director of Health Department, said “We appreciate the work of Healthy Pittsfield partners, including the Departments of Cultural and Community Development, Berkshire Regional Planning, the Tyler Street Business group, Be Well Berkshires and the Health department.  The loop is a great resource to refresh during lunch breaks, to walk to the Common or Farmers Market, or to start a walking group with neighbors.”
