Chestnut Tree Planting, Springside Park

On May 24th there will be a Chestnut Tree seed planting event held at Springside Park.  The event will be put on with the collaboration of The American Chestnut Tree foundation located in Ashville, North Carolina. Volunteers for the planting are invited and needed.

Recently, Springside Park has created a seed orchard in preparation for the tree planting.  On the day of the event, volunteers will plant 2,000 Chestnut seeds. The foundation’s partnership with Springside Park will further help in its mission to “…restore the American chestnut tree to our eastern woodlands to benefit our environment, our wildlife, and our society.” (The American Chestnut Tree Foundation)

The partnership with the American Chestnut Tree Foundation began when Mayor Bianchi signed a plan to support their efforts.

Mayor Bianchi stated, “The planting of 2,000 blight-resistant Chestnut Trees in Springside Park demonstrates Pittsfield’s commitment to improving the local environment.  I was pleased with the opportunity to partner with this important environmental cause. I am also very pleased at the reintroduction of a great species that dominated our region for centuries.  Springside Park is an amazing resource in Pittsfield and the work with the American Chestnut Tree Foundation furthers its value to, not only our City, but the surrounding areas as well.”

The event occurring on May 24th, will take place at the old zoo within Springside Park (balloons will mark the route) from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.  R.S.V.P will host a lunch during the planting. Please contact Bob Presutti, 442-0444, to confirm your involvement.
