City Construction Project to Enable Safe Routes to Silvio O. Conte Community School

Mayor Daniel L. Bianchi and the City of Pittsfield Department of Public Works announces the “Safe Routes To School Project” for the Silvio O. Conte Community School .  The purpose of this project is to improve pedestrian access and safety in the Silvio O. Conte Community School (Conte School) area, thereby, encouraging students to walk or bicycle to school. This project consists of sidewalk and pedestrian safety improvements near the Conte School including the roadways of West Union Street, South Atlantic Street, Taubert Avenue, Atlantic Street, Linden Street, and Summit Avenue. The project totals a distance of 0.24 miles.

The project improvements include increased pedestrian safety and ADA compliant sidewalks and curb ramps.  To accommodate the new sidewalks, intersection improvements including signage and crosswalk pavement markings will be added at the intersections of West Union Street/South Atlantic Street, South Atlantic Street/Taubert Avenue/Atlantic Street/Linden Street/Summit Avenue. Additional proposed improvements will include new curbing, pavement markings, traffic and pedestrian warning signs, and landscaping features.

For the management of traffic, all roadways in the project, Atlantic and South Atlantic Streets will  remain open to residents during construction. Occasional traffic disruptions may occur but every effort will be made to minimize inconvenience. Pedestrian and vehicular access to abutting properties will be maintained throughout construction.

As part of this project, Atlantic and South Atlantic Streets will be permanently converted to one way traffic flow from north to south.

The contract has been awarded to New England Concrete and is scheduled to commence this month.   The project is administered by MassDOT.
