Pittsfield's Department of Community Development is Hosting a Receivership Training Seminar

The Massachusetts Attorney General’s office is looking for partners to work with throughout Berkshire County to tackle home rehabilitation projects through its Abandoned Housing Initiative. The Pittsfield Department of Community Development, along with the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, is hosting an informational session on Tuesday evening April 15, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, 70 Allen Street, Pittsfield, MA. Special Assistant Attorney General, Julie Datres, will be conducting the training seminar.

As part of the Abandoned Housing Initiative, the receivership process uses court- appointed receivers to act as general contractors for the purpose of rehabilitating dangerous and/or abandoned homes and address the blight created by such homes that are located in otherwise viable neighborhoods.  Such properties are distressed single-family and multi-family residential structures not only in Pittsfield but throughout Berkshire County that have been placed under court-ordered receivership.  Since inception, the Attorney General Office’s Abandoned Housing Initiative has worked with 53 cities and towns throughout the Commonwealth, representing nearly 700 abandoned properties.  Since expanding the program in 2011, the Attorney General Office has worked with communities on over 500 different properties.

Anyone who can demonstrate ability and experience rehabbing distressed properties could make a good potential receiver.  If you are a large or small construction company, a lawyer, or a for-profit / not-for-profit community group, you are encouraged to attend this event.  During the event, you will learn more and determine if you or your organization is a good fit to be a receiver for a property threatened by foreclosure and/or in need of rehabilitation.  Learn how you can help revitalize these properties, reverse the ill effects of the foreclosure crisis, and keep our neighborhoods safe and secure.

The City of Pittsfield’s Department of Community Development is acting as a funding monitor for the Receivership Program in Pittsfield.
