Our Mission
The Department of Public Works & Utilities provides essential services to the 42,000+ citizens of the City of Pittsfield. We operate on a 24 hour basis with pagers and night staffing.
Our primary areas of responsibility include the operation and maintenance of:
Drinking Water System
- 6 drinking water reservoirs
- water treatment plants (Cleveland and Ashley)
- 241 miles of water distribution pipes
- 2 flow control stations
- 5 pumping stations
- 4 water storage tanks
Streets
- 180 miles of accepted streets
- 24 Miles of unaccepted streets
- sidewalks
- City bridges
- Traffic signs and signal systems
- Weed harvesting program on local lakes
- Public Shade trees
Sanitary Sewer System
- 182 miles of sewer pipes
- 6 sewer pump stations
- 28.7 MGD Wastewater Treatment Plant
- Industrial pretreatment program
Storm Water Drainage System
- 80 miles of drainage pipes
- catch basins and outfalls
Engineering
- Planning, design and construction management of City projects
- Infrastructure record keeping
- Permits for water, sewer and storm water connections and repairs, driveways, and water meters
- Tax maps
- GIS services for all divisions. – Pending
Vehicle Maintenance
- 200 City vehicles excluding Fire Dept. and Police Dept.
Administration
- Supports all DPW and DPU Divisions
- Maintains parking permit accounts for municipal parking areas
- Maintains about 16,000 water and sewer billing accounts
- Administers the contract for residential curbside trash and recycling collection
- Administers the contract with Covanta/Pittsfield Resource Recovery Plant
- Oversees environmental monitoring of City owned landfills (closed)
- Issues snow emergencies.
The City employs 77 full-time employees in the Department of Public Works & Utilities.
