Personnel Department
Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The City of Pittsfield's Personnel Department is a delegated civil service office having authority for the administration of specific civil service functions for all positions within municipal service. The Personnel Department processes all applications for employment; requisitions for labor service and public safety positions; prepares all related records, correspondence, reports and verifies eligibility for promotional exams. Other duties include: preparing and processing internal and external advertising of vacant positions, implementing the civil service employment recruitment process and when requested, assists in establishing a search committee for specific positions and provides related clerical and administrative support.
The Personnel Department completes required paperwork for new municipal employees and is the official custodian for all municipal personnel records; coordinates pre-employment physical examinations and post-employment fitness-for-duty evaluations with the City’s occupational health facility. The Department administers all workers' compensation claims and injured-on-duty claims for police officers and fire fighters and acts as a liaison with the City Physician for the ongoing evaluation of injured employees. The Department is also responsible for drafting and updating City personnel policies such as the Family Medical Leave Act Policy, Sexual Harassment Policy, Drug and Alcohol Policy for Employees Holding Commercial Drivers Licenses, Safety Policy, Seat Belt Policy, Affirmative Action Policy, and Internet Policy.
In addition, the Department is responsible for negotiating, drafting, and interpreting collective bargaining agreements for the following ten collective bargaining units:

The Personnel Manager serves as the coordinator for the Personnel Review Board which acts as an advisory board to the Mayor and City Council in connection with the creation of new positions and upgrades. TheManager also serves as the ADA Coordinator for the City, by facilitating any complaints related to handicapped accessibility to City owned buildings and property.
