Conservation Commission
The Conservation Commission is a seven-member group of volunteers from the city, that reviews permits for any work proposed to be performed, if it is: within 100 feet of a wetland, or within 200 feet of a river or perennial stream and in the flood plain or within 100 feet of other resource areas protected by state law.
To provide day-to-day assistance to permit applicants, the city employs a full-time Conservation Agent and full-time clerk. The Conservation office has been moved to City Hall 70 Allen Street, Room 202, Pittsfield Massachusetts.
The commission holds regular meetings to discuss work proposed and issues Determinations and Orders of Conditions for work permitted. The primary function of the Conservation Commission is to protect the Commonwealth’s natural resources within the city. The Conservation Commission also oversees and manages conservation properties in the city. The Conservation Commissioner also must sign off on all building permit applications prior to the Building Department issuing a building permit for a given project; residential or commercial.
